2021 for Gaming on the move began with a boom in sales ,
driven by a multitude of factors including the shortage that grips the market
for consoles and components for desktop systems. Thanks also to a significant
leap in performance compared to the past, never as today the gaming notebooks
increasingly represent the idea of desktop replacement . In this context, Acer
has decided to update its line-up with convincing proposals from all points of
view. Let's find out how the Acer Nitro 5 AN515-45 fares in one of its best
configurations , a performance thoroughbred that does not want to give up
maximum portability.
Our configuration
To make us better understand what can be marketingmediaweb done in 2021 in
just 24 mm of thickness, Acer has allowed us to get our hands on a Nitro 5 with
AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX processor, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 GPU (85W) and 16GB of
DDR4 RAM. at 3200MHz . The best APU from AMD, based on the Zen3
"Cezanne" architecture, offers 8 Cores and 16 Threads with a base
clock of 3.3 GHz and integrated graphics Radeon RX Vega 8. The graphics sector,
accompanied by NVIDIA, will allow us to focus on another interesting aspect,
namely the gaming performance of a high-end video card with a remarkably low
TGP .()_
Where our eye will linger is a 15.6-inch IPS panel, Full HD
native resolution and 144Hz Refresh Rate, with response times of 3
milliseconds. An excellent divinebeautytips module that does not make us regret higher
resolutions, helped enormously by the anti-glare finish. Good viewing angles
and color space coverage is absolutely average.
In terms of autonomy, we will hardly be able to exceed three
hours of use in portability but the rest is not a solution oriented to this
kind of target.
Appearance, materials and touch & feel
Acer's philosophy, in its budget line for Gaming, translates nanobiztech into a body with essential but refined lines, small dimensions and a
screen-to-body ratio reduced to the bone, with very thin side frames and enough
space to accommodate even a 720p webcam.
The use of plastics is remarkable, albeit of excellent techcrunchblog quality for the most part. The palm rest is treated with a soft-touch finish
that returns a good feeling while the bottom of the device, where we find
generous windows for air inlet, is not treated like the rest of the device.
Without major changes in terms of design compared to previous models, on the
back there are two Lamborghinian memory vents for the escape of hot air,
characterized by a metallic red accent that all in all does not particularly
clutter the view.
Also in terms of assembly and solidity Acer confirms globalmarketingbusiness the
goodness expressed in the past on this line, which returns feedback from a
completely different category and an experience without any creaking. The
display hinges shine in particular, allowing the device to be opened with one
hand with an exceptionally smooth glide.
The keyboard is perhaps the aspect that has less thrilled us
during our adventure with the new Nitro 5. Equipped with an excellent RGB
backlighting totally customizable , it has a too short stroke and a feedback to
the pressure that is anything but satisfactory. From this point of view, in
this case, yes, we are forced to return with our feet on the ground.
On the battlefield
The combination proposed by Acer with the 5900HX and the
3080 at 85W offers several food for thought. Although we are talking about
components of absolute value and with undoubted computational capabilities, it
was reasonable to expect, at a certain point, to come to terms with the feared
compromise .
Not all fields of application allow to highlight the
barriers of such a low TGP. Fortunately, it is also quite unlikely that this
particularity could somehow compromise the overall experience. healthnutritionhints
The performance expressed on Forza Horizon 4 and Metro
Exodus in its traditional form leaves no room for imagination. At native
resolution, high details and traditional rasterization, the 85W RTX 3080
produced an average of 200.7 and 69.41 frames per second respectively, placing
it exactly in its range of expertise. At this point, the canonical integrated
benchmark of Shadow of the Tomb Raider is obligatory, which highlighted a completely
different situation, collecting " just " 91 FPS. We are well above
the playability area but these are scores that can also be reached with
lower-end solutions.
To narrow down the critical scenarios even more, we have
decided tochallenge the Acer Nitro 5 with Ray Tracing strokes . Shadow of the
Tomb Raider and Metros Exodus turn out to be bread for his teeth, with an
average of 63 and 59.91 FPS even without taking advantage of the DLSS. Numbers
suggestive of the enormous potential of this configuration, despite the limit
imposed on the video card.
A new challenge
Not satisfied, we decided to squeeze even more hardware made
available by Acer with some of the most interesting titles of the moment. The
first walk we decide to do it on Control . The acclaimed title of Remedy has
managed to upset the canons of PC Gaming thanks to a technical sector and an
implementation of Ray Tracing to say the least astonishing . In this spirit,
the results obtained by our RTX 3080 Mobility met expectations. Also in this case
respecting the native resolution and the presets proposed by the Software
House, at high quality and with only Ray Tracing active, it is possible to
maintain an average of 49.7 FPS, which become 73.2 with the DLSS active and set
for the best possible quality.
The most commented title of recent months could not be
missing: Cyberpunk 2077 . Net of the criticisms that accompanied its launch,
the work done by CD Projekt Red remains, without fear of denial, a work of art
in motion and as such is able to bring most of the machines currently on the
market to their knees. . Taking into account some Frame Drops in the central
areas of Night City, especially in the Corpo Plaza area, the overall experience
with Ray Tracing Ultra and DLSS set for the best quality speaks of an average
of 51.7 FPS, which becomes 39, 7 if we decide to do without NVIDIA's
SuperSampling.
Last, but not least , a dutiful tribute to Metro Exodus and
its beautiful Enhanced Edition . The new full-bodied free update developed by
the guys at 4A Games undoubtedly represents the link between the present and
the future of Ray Tracing. The Acer Nitro 5 with Ryzen 9 5900HX and RTX 3080
allows you to fully enjoy the visual experience proposed by the Ukrainian
developer without practically in any case approaching the critical threshold.
The overall average, with presets set to maximum, tells us of a laptop capable
of quietly maintaining 51.50 frames per second without DLSS. Pulling the bunny
out of the hat we finally reach 66.92 FPS.
Temperatures, noise and software
Once the Frames lottery is over, it is necessary to open a
proper parenthesis on the attitude of the notebook in the main usage scenarios.
As we have already mentioned, the new configuration offered
by Acer in its Nitro 5 does not record major changes in terms of aesthetics and
dimensions, but the same is also true for the thermal design .
The AN515-45 features a double tangential fan design, with
intake on the bottom and double outlet on the sides and rear. The amount of air
that the fans implemented by Acer are able to move is literally impressive and
the same goes for the noise.. Not that the fans are loud per se, but the high
number of revolutions they are forced to in the most demanding scenarios make
them perhaps too audible. A real shame, since the management of temperatures in
any other scenario of use makes them imperceptible .
With this in mind, the lack of support for NVIDIA's
Whispermode 2.0 technology seems like a wasted opportunity, supplanted by the
equally excellent Nitro Sense proprietary management system, whose performance
we have nothing to complain about. Present instead the other optimizations
designed by NVIDIA for the new Mobility solutions , including the Resizable BAR
and the Dynamic Boost mode which allows, in some scenarios, to push the GPU up
to 90-95W.
Fortunately, the price to pay in terms of noise translates
into a machine that has only skipped the critical thresholds and never really
reached them. The Ryzen 9 is certainly not the coolest solution on the market
todayand the numerous 90-degree peaks recorded are the litmus test. Despite
everything, however, we have always remained within well-defined tolerability
ranges, with a GPU managed in a masterly way and always below 75 degrees.
