WINDOWS 11 TO THE TEST, THE MAIN NEWS OF THE FIRST BUILD
The first official build of Window 11 is among us. This is a preliminary version intended for the Dev channel, that is, designed for developers and not exactly stable, but important news already emerges from the latter. In these days we have therefore put the OS to the test and we are preparing to analyze the most relevant news that we have discovered . techiescity
At the moments, however, it is impossible to carry out a
"review", given that we are still at an early stage of the
development of Windows 11 (which will culminate in the release of the free
update for Windows 10 in a stable version starting from the first half of
2022). Also, in this article we will steer clear of the minimum requirements
issue, as the official verification tool has been retired and there may be
several changes in the future .
New Start button and taskbar
The most evident innovations since the first start of
Windows 11 are certainly the renewed Start button and the new taskbar. The
icons that we usually find at the bottom left on Windows 10 are in fact moved
to the center . This change reminded someone of macOS, but the differences are
there. An important change is the one related to the search functionality of
the operating system. If on Windows 10 there is a bar of important dimensions,
on Windows 11 only the magnifying glass icon peeps out, which then opens a
window to carry out all the necessary searches.
Apps, documents, web and more - you can find essentially
everything through this tab. Among other things, from here you can also manage
linked accounts, as well as take a look at the main apps.
By pressing, instead, on the iconic Start button , the
change from the current one is particularly evident. At the top it is possible
to view the main applications, while at the bottom there is a section dedicated
to recommended contents. There is also a button to quickly access a list sorted
by initial letter of the software installed, as well as a box to manage the
Microsoft account with which you logged in and possibly log out. The classic
power button is instead placed at the bottom right and allows you to stop,
suspend or restart the system.
For the rest, the classic information relating to, for
example, the time and status of the network remain at the bottom right, but it
is instead interesting to deepen the other icons present by default in the
taskbar. In fact, here, in addition to the classic File Explorer and the
Microsoft Edge browser, also the Task View and Widget peep out . The first
allows you to manage the tabs open on the screen, quickly creating other
desktops as well. The graphical interface has been modified and multitasking is
now more comfortable and simple to carry out, thanks also to the possibility of
positioning the cards properly.
About this last feature, called Snap Layout , to access it
just open any program, move the mouse over the icon in the upper right corner
which is generally used to "expand" or "reduce" the window
and select the area of the screen where you want to place the program. This
allows you to better and quickly manage the various programs you are using.
On the other hand, by pressing the Widget icon, a section
appears on the left that allows you to quickly access a lot of information. For
example, by default we find widgets related to weather, markets, NBA games and
main news . You can also manage interests, in order to customize what Microsoft
News offers.
At the moment it is not actually possibles to do much else
in terms of customization, but it can be said that the Widget section of
Windows 11 is in fact the natural evolution of the Windows 10 Interests section
(which appears at the bottom right in the latest builds of the OS). Microsoft
has also made it official that this section makes use of artificial
intelligence to adapt to user preferences.
Revised design and new Microsoft Store
Windows 11 brings with it new wallpapers, redesigned icons
and an overall revised design . Just open the classic File Explorer to see
what's new in the new version of Microsoft's operating system. The windows in
fact have rounded edges and in general a more "modern" look, as well
as icons finally in line with Fluent Design.
It may look like a small aspect, but in reality using the
computer you notice a more coherent style and the "rejuvenation" is
pleasant, at least for our tastes.
Among other things, although it takes some time to get used
to, the aforementioned renewed taskbar is actually able to simplify the classic
daily activities for the user. In fact, among the novelties on an aesthetic
level, we find a new volume menu , which also includes buttons to activate
Bluetooth and an airplane mode.
Furthermore, the interface linked to the OS settings has
been revised with a design decidedly more in step with the times, as well as
the upper toolbar of File Explorer has been revised (in short, there have been
several additions also compared to the known ISO of the leak). Then there are a
revised notification center and a Dark mode: in other words, the Redmond
company is making several changes to the OS interface.
There is also the renewed Microsoft Store , which, however,
we have not been able to access in Italian. In any case, the latter is
particularly different from what we have seen so far on Windows 10. It is based
on four sections: Home, Apps, Gaming and Entertainment (or "Movies &
TV"). Here, too, the design is much more modern and pleasing to the eye.
For the moment, the new applications available are limited:
they range from WinZip to some programs of the Adobe suite, but in the future
there will certainly be much more. We also remind you that there will also be
the integrated Amazon Appstore, which will allow you to install Android
applications . However, the latter is currently unavailable.
For the rest, we reiterate that the build used for the test
represents a preliminary version that has several limitations . In fact, some
features are missing, such as the integration of Microsoft Teams and the Auto
HDR functionality for gaming . Furthermore, it is essentially useless for the
moment to carry out insights related to performance, battery life and the like,
as it is a build for the developers and among other things there are myriads of
variables in play.
In any case, if you are among those who want to get your
hands on the new version of the OS right now and you have a compatible "secondary"
PC to use only for testing (this version is not stable for everyday use) , you
can refer to our guide on how to install Windows 11 via the Dev (Insider)
channel .
